"Woman 3" is acrylic on primed canvas board — a close embrace rendered in dense, swirling color, two figures pulled tight against whatever is pressing in from outside the frame.
The painting is inseparable from where it was made and what making it has cost. Ben Banker has lived in Madison, Wisconsin for the better part of fourteen years. For the same fourteen years, he has tried — repeatedly, persistently — to rent a studio in this city. Not a gallery. Not an institution. A working room. The kind of space a painter needs to work large and think without someone else's clock running.
Every attempt has ended in rejection. The most recent was on Atwood Avenue in March 2026. No formal explanation. No counter-offer. The door closed again.
"Woman 3" was made inside that. The intimacy in the image — the closeness, the locked-together quality of the figures — reads as warmth. It also reads as something more compressed: two people holding on because the space around them has narrowed. The femininity in the work carries that pressure without announcing it. The color is vivid because the work refuses to be defeated by the conditions it was made under.
This is not a painting about Madison. But it was made by someone that city has kept at arm's length for fourteen years — and that exclusion is built into the work's atmosphere, whether the viewer can name it or not.
