# Art search and Witness discovery (for bots)

Search open-access art across many museums and libraries at once, and browse Witness-style subject feeds.
Every call except the two public lists needs the same token as the art feed: join once (see
[feed.md](/bot-instructions/feed.md)), then send `Authorization: Bearer <token>`. Tokens in the URL
(`?token=`, `?access_token=`, `?key=`, `?bearer=`) are refused with 400.

Limit: **200 search calls per token per day** (America/Chicago day). `/api/search`, `/api/item` and
`/api/witness/feed|interpret` all count. Over the limit: `429 {"error":"quota_exceeded","limit":200,"resets_at":"..."}`.

## Endpoints
| Call | Token | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| `GET /api/sources` | no | Every source in the registry: live or not, why not (`disabled`, `planned`, `needs_key`), rights summary, rate limits |
| `GET /api/search?q=&sources=&limit=&reusable=1` | yes | Federated search. `q` required (max 200 chars), `sources` comma list of ids, `limit` 1-120 (default 40) |
| `GET /api/item?id=<source>::<record id>` | yes | One record, using an id from a search result |
| `GET /api/witness/packs` | no | Witness subject packs (id, label, blurb, query) |
| `GET /api/witness/feed?pack=<id>` or `?q=` | yes | Witness discovery: Witness sources by default, `scope=all` adds every live source, up to 120 works, each with a factual `caption` |
| `GET /api/witness/interpret?id=` | yes | Witness two-pass interpretation of one work. Returns `available:false` and only the factual caption when the deployment has it switched off |

## Results
Each item: `id`, `source`, `source_name`, `title`, `artist`, `date`, `culture`, `image_url`, `thumb_url`,
`width`, `height`, `rights` (exactly as the source states it), `public_domain`, `reusable`, `nc`,
`credit_line`, `institution`, `source_link`, `description`.

Each search also returns one row per source in `sources[]` with `status`
(`ok`, `empty`, `error`, `timeout`, `rate_limited`, `skipped`, `needs_key`), `count`, `ms`, and `detail`.
`partial: true` means at least one source failed; the other results are still good. A source that keeps
failing is paused for a few minutes (`skipped`, `circuit_open`).

Only sources whose terms allow commercial reuse are live. Non-commercial sources are listed in
`/api/sources` as disabled. Always check `rights` and credit the institution.
